Historical Background of PAA

The first trade between Côte d’Ivoire and the outside world started way back in the fifteenth century.
The facilities set up at that time proved to be inadequate before the rapid growth in the volumes of cargos. Since then, the idea of building a proper port started taking shape.
Toward the end of the 19th century, research was undertaken to determine the best location for this modern infrastructure on the Ivorian coast.
Following several trials, the first French engineer Roger Peilnard- Considere, drew the plans for work to start in 1938. The work was completed on 23 July 1950 with the digging of the Vridi Canal. This artificial canal was dug in the offshore bar to enable vessels to access the calm waters of the lagoon.
The Abidjan Port was officially opened on 5 February 1951.
